On Wednesday we had our School Investiture where our School Captains, Vice Captains, SRC representatives and Sports House Captains and Vice Captains, made their pledge and received their badges. It was wonderful to have our parents and friends attend this occasion and to participate in placing the badge on their children.

Student Leaders Morning Tea
I had the absolute pleasure of meeting with our 4 student leaders on Tuesday for morning tea. We spent time talking about their role as student leaders and they brainstormed what makes a good leader (see image below) and set themselves a goal. We also discussed things that students are finding working well at the moment, as well as some things we hope to achieve. See a summarisation of their responses below:
Things that are working well in our school:
Piper: All the extra sport and activities that can now take place. The Buddies program is also great!
Jake: Our playground is a wonderful place to be - its spacious and friendly
Spencer: The classroom is really good - it's fun and we learn lots of new things. Some of our classrooms are really big too - I like the Kindergarten rooms they are nice and big and fun!
Lily: The teachers and all the staff are kind and helpful.
What's something we can work together to improve or achieve:
Piper and Spencer: Working on modifyng the school creed to be more modern and inclusive of all students
Jake and Lily: Looking at getting a Buddy Bench in the Primary playground so there is a place for students to get support with their friendsips
Jake: Buddies is great so could we get other Year groups working together e.g. Year 1 and Year 5 or Year 4 and Year 2 so when the Year 3 students join the primary playground they have an older friend to show them around.
We certainly are lucky with our leaders. I am looking forward to continuing to work with them this year.
School Photos - Monday 14 March
School photos are happening next Monday! If you have not brought your photo envelope back to school you can still bring it with you and hand to your teacher Monday morning. Students need to wear Summer Uniform. "Bring your smiles everyone!"
Construction of our Before and After School Care Facility
Construction will begin next week for our new OOSH - Out of School Hours facility. Today they have put up some security fencing as they start with the demolition of the concrete paths and part of the car park. Students who use the pathway to go out to Denison Street will be redirected to another gate on the western side of the security fencing. We will keep you informed as the building commences.
Yarn and Cuppa Afternoon
We are looking forward to our Yarn and Cuppa Afternoon, to meet with all our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families and their children. This is a great time to chat with your child's classroom teacher about what goals you would like to see for your child in 2022. It is also a time to get together as a community and catch up over some afternoon tea.
Backflips Against Bullying Show - 17 March '22
Next Thursday 17th March, we welcome the Backflips Against Bullying program again to our school. This program features high-energy 1 hour performances by incredible acrobats.
Mudgee Public School students had the opportunity to view program A last year, and this year we move to program B. The program has a 3-pronged approach:
1. Build Them Strong: Teaching Resilience and Practical Tools to help Victims
2. Social Influence: Empowering students to hold each other accountable
All students from Kindergarten to Year 6 will be attending a session during the day. Perhaps you could ask your child on Thursday afternoon what they learnt from this very entertaining and informative performance.
This is great timing, as next Friday 18 March is also the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence (NDA). This is Australia’s key bullying prevention initiative and it celebrates 12 years of action, connecting schools and communities to find workable solutions to prevent bullying.
The theme for 2022 is Kindness Culture. By building Kindness Culture together, we can promote inclusion, respect and community belonging for all students in schools across Australia.
As a school, we will be taking the Anti Bullying Pledge and using many of the great resources in our classrooms. We will share some of the photos from this day on our Facebook page.
Check-In Assessments for Year 4 and 6
Check-in assessments are online assessment for students in Years 4 and 6. They are mapped to the NSW Syllabuses and National Literacy and Numeracy Learning Progressions and there are two assessments in reading and numeracy. The purpose of the assessment is to give timely feedback to teachers to allow them to purposefully differentiate teaching and learning to meet student individual needs.
Year 4 will be completing the assessment in Week 8, and Year 6 in Week 10.
Please no parking in the bus zone
This is a reminder not to park in the bus zone. We have many buses that come to our school to drop off and collect students and so it is a very busy area both in the morning and the afternoon. Police are often driving around the schools at these times, and will fine you if you are in the bus zone.
We’re welcoming our community back on site!
Come join us for coffee on Thursday mornings, 9.15-9.45 until the end of Term, on the grass area in front of the Office. All parents and community members are welcome. So come along and re-connect with your Mudgee Public School community. Younger siblings are welcome. Looking forward to chatting with you.

Distribution of Rapid Antigen Tests
The NSW Department of Education has authorised schools to distribute more RAT kits to students where appropriate. We have now moved to symptomatic testing. Tests are to be used at your discretion such as if your child is symptomatic or there are cases in their class.
Today you will receive 8 test kits in your child's bag. These test kits are saliva test devices. Instructions for their use are in the pack.
A reminder that testing is not mandatory; however, it is strongly encouraged when students are displaying symptoms. Testing is a surveillance measure that helps keep all of us a little safer. If you need more kits because you have run out, we have limited spares, so once again contact your child's teacher or the office to see if any are available.
Thank you for doing your bit to help keep us as healthy as possible.

PICKING UP CHILDREN EARLY
As parents are now permitted to enter school grounds, you are asked, when picking up children early, to come into the office and sign your child out in the Early Leavers Book. If you know, in advance, that you need to pick up your child early, it is advisable to send a note to the teacher with the time. Parents then take the leavers slip to their child's classroom and collect from there. If a student is coming back to school after an appointment they need to be signed back in.

Class Corner - 2ND
Our literacy unit of work called ‘characterisation’ has supported us in exploring the appearance, personality traits and feelings of a range of different characters. This week we created a pretend missing persons poster for ‘Special Kev’ from the book by Chris McKimmie. After creating a class bank of words relating to his appearance and personality, we did a draft piece of writing before publishing our work on to a poster to hang up in our classroom.

Class Corner - 5/6MC
5/6MC have been learning so many new things in our Science unit, "Food and Fibre" this term. Mrs McRae has created so many fun and engaging learning experiences for our students. They have grown their own beans under various conditions (not enough water/light, too much water/light), they have created beautiful woven artworks using a variety of natural and man-made fibres and they have drawn sweet illustrations of root vegetables and plants with Mrs Cowan. You may have seen our First Place ribbon at the Mudgee Show last weekend for Best Primary and Teenage Class Project!

NAPLAN 2022
The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment of literacy and numeracy skills. Students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 participate in the annual tests in writing, reading, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy. All NSW schools will sit NAPLAN online in 2022.
Our school will be participating in NAPLAN between 10 and 20 May 2022.
In preparation for NAPLAN, our school will also be participating in practice tests between 21st to 25th March, 2022. The practice test is a trial run and key preparation activity for NAPLAN in May. It is not an assessment of student ability, and the tests will not be marked.
If you have any questions about NAPLAN, please contact your child’s teacher.

P&C
Our next meeting is our AGM on Monday 14 March at which all executive positions are declared vacant and election of office bearers for 2022 will occur. If you are interested in any of the positions please reach out to us at mudgeepublicschool@pandcaffiliate.org.au for more information. We are always encouraging new people to join the P&C whether as general members or in a more substantive role, we love new ideas and fresh perspectives on things. We hold two meetings a term which run for approximately 1hr to 1.5hrs. It's a great opportunity to contribute along with hearing what's happening at MPS and meet other parents and carers of students at school. The AGM will be followed immediately by a second general P&C meeting for 2022. You can join us in person in the school library at 7pm or via Zoom. Please register here for the Zoom meeting:
The youngest child at school brought home a donation drive envelope for Stewart House a couple of weeks ago. Stewart House provides safe and engaging programs for disadvantaged children.

Community Messages
Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisationruns school holiday STEAM activities for primary school aged kids.
Applications are now open for interested students, aged 8-13. This looks like a great opportunity to bring some fun science to the kids during the holidays.
Places are limited, so if you think this is something your son or daughter would enjoy, the advice is to enrol kids quickly.
