MPS Newsletter - Week 11, Term 1 - 8 April 2022
Principal's Report
Thank you
I want to sincerely thank our whole school community in what has been another term full of resilience and unexpected manouvering, yet still a highly successful one. It seems like a long time ago I wrote to you all to share news of Rapid Antigen Testing, cohorting, and other COVID measures - so much water has moved under the bridge since then. Where we sit now is at the end of a busy term that has seen some pleasant normality - kids sport, music, extra curricular groups, parents on site, interviews, parent helpers, mingling of students, canteens functioning normally, etc. We should be very proud of what we have achieved this term, and should use the holidays as a time to pause, reflect, rest and enjoy time with our families.
School Cross Country
Our School Cross Country Carnival was a highly succesful day on Tuesday. A big thanks to Mr Harris for all his hard work and organisation. Photos can be found on our Facebook page. Congratulations all students.
ANZAC March
Mudgee Public School will continue our tradition of taking part in the annual ANZAC Day March on Monday 25th April 2022. Those students who would like to march are asked to assemble at the corner of Mortimer and Perry Streets at approximately 10:15am on ANZAC Day, Monday 25th March 2022. MPS staff will meet the students and assemble them ready for the march which commences at 10:30am. We are again asking our families to please collect their child/children at the end of the march once we arrive at the cenotaph, prior to the start of the Commemorative Service at 11am. We ask that parents collect their children from near the equipment in Robertson Park near Lovejoy Street. Students are then free to attend the Commemorative Service with their families. Students who are attending are asked to wear their full summer school uniform including their school hat. For those students wearing a relative’s medals, these are worn over the right breast.
On the topic of ANZAC Day, on Thursday this week, Mudgee Public School held our annual ANZAC ceremony. A huge thank you to all families who sent in flowers , to our School Captains & Seb Turner who performed The Last Post on the trumpet. Special thanks to our guest speaker Mr Geoff Robinson, president of the Mudgee RSL sub-branch. Photos can be found on our Facebook page or by clicking below.
School Photo Catch-Up
Due to quite a large number of students being away on our Photo Day (14/3/2022), MSP photographers will be coming back to do individual photos of the children who missed out. They will not be doing class photos, just the individual ones. These will be on Thursday 5th May - Term 2 Week 2. Those students are asked to wear their summer uniform on that day.
Kindergarten 2023
As mentioned last fortnight, many of our Kindergarten Transition events will start taking place. A full list of these proposed dates are below, so feel free to start sharing. The first is a Kindergarten and Mudgee Public Information evening on Tuesday 10 May.
Mother's Day Breakfast Alert
A big save the date for our Mother's Day Breakfast which will be in Week 2 on Tuesday 3 May. A note will go home on the first day of school to try and get an indication on numbers for catering purposes. This is a completely free event, so hopefully mums can find some time to come up and spend the morning with their children and we can say thank you for being so special. We mayt also be looking for somae fathers to volunteer their time for serving :)
In the P&C section below, there is also a flyer for the upcoming Mother's Day Stall.
School Development Day - Tuesday 26 April
The first day of Term 2, Tuesday 26 April, is a School Development Day (SDD), this is a day for staff only as students will return to school on Wednesday 27 April. On our SDD, we will be working with schools across the Cudgegong Learning Community (CLC) at Mudgee High and at Mudgee PS. Our office staff will also be engaging in Professional Learning, and therefore our office will be unattended between 10:30am and 1:40pm.
Life Education
In the first two weeks of next term, we welcome back Healthy Harold and the Life Education Team. All classes will visit the Life Ed van and whilst there is normally a cost for this program, this year it will be covered by the school. Life Education is a fantastic program that aligns with the curriculum which empowers children to make safer healthier choices so they can live happier lives. Each stage has a different unit, but themes are generally around Physical Health, Social and Emotional Wellbeing and Safety. Follow up resources are provided for the classroms. We hope your children enjoy these lessons and find them beneficial.
Rapid Antigen Testing
We have placed an order for more Rapid Antigen Testing Kits. As soon as they arrive, we will organise for these to be sent home with students. If families have run out and require more, we still have some avaialble in the front office. Hopefully the new batch will be ready for the beginning of term.
Money for the Floods
We had a bucket at the door of the Easter Hat Parade and raised $414.25. We will hold onto this to pass on to schools and communities in the north of our state once our students hold a fundraiser next term.
Easter Raffle
On the topic of fundraising, our Easter Raffle raised just over $1500 (final figures still being counted). Thank you for your support

Library
PRC - The Premiers Reading Challenge is continuing! This is a challenge that all students across the state have an opportunity to participate in. Students in K-2 and Stage 2 should have brought home a yellow sheet to begin writing the books that they have read. Once you have read the required books and filled out the sheet, you can return the sheet to me in the Library. All books are specially marked in the Library to make it as easy as possible to participate. K-2 students need to read 30 books with red PRC stickers on the front. Years 3-4 need to read 20 books with green PRC stickers on the front, and Years 5-6 need to read 20 books with purple PRC stickers on the front. Years 5-6 students are logging their books straight online during Library time, but if you want a yellow sheet to keep track, please come and see me in the Library. More information can be found at https://online.det.nsw.edu.au/prc/home.html Students will need to know their computer login details to log the books online themselves.
I hope everyone has a safe, happy Easter and holiday break.
Happy Reading!
Mrs Vitnell (Teacher Librarian)
Class Corner - 1S
I have thoroughly enjoyed teaching 1S, having returned to class after an initial 2 week block at the beginning of Term 1. And it was wonderful to feel welcomed by the students as I got to know each of them over the past 3 weeks whilst Mr Smith has been on leave.
Here’s just a glimpse into our Learning in Action…
We have continued to focus on Phonics and have particularly enjoyed exploring figurative language through our English texts. We have learnt how word play, rhyme and onomatopoeia evoke feelings, emotion and humour (there have been many giggling moments!) And we are becoming more confident in using these elements in our writing.
The students have embraced our Maths lessons with eagerness through partnered, small and large group, concrete hands-on games and activities. We have reinforced and extended knowledge in skip counting, Friends of 10 and bridging numbers, grouping and sharing equally, estimating and measuring area of closed shapes and recording results of our findings.
1S Artists have also displayed their creative talents by completing several artworks.
It has been so rewarding to observe 1S displaying Mudgee Public’s PBL principles and especially acts of kindness and care towards each other both during their class time and outdoors in the playground.
Mr Smith would be extremely proud.
May you all enjoy a safe and happy holiday. Kindest Regards,
Mrs Mischa Peters
Class Corner - 5/6E
This term students from 5/6E have enjoyed studying the novel Wonder by RJ Palacio. The novel is set in parts where each character tells their version of events. Each chapter is written from one perspective and as a result features monologue. To compliment this students were given the task of presenting a monologue from a favourite book or movie. They were asked to consider their choices carefully and where possible choose a character that they felt was in some way representative of themselves.
The choices were fantastic, and each performance was highly engaging.
Students were also tasked with reviewing their peers and if time permits, will get a chance to read the reviews before the end of term.
Cheers, Mrs Kelly Endacott
NAPLAN 2022
The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment of literacy and numeracy skills. Students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 participate in the annual tests in writing, reading, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy. All NSW schools will sit NAPLAN online in 2022.
Our school will be participating in NAPLAN between 10 and 20 May 2022.
In preparation for NAPLAN, our school has also participated in practice tests between 21st to 25th March, 2022. The practice test is a trial run and key preparation activity for NAPLAN in May. It is not an assessment of student ability, and the tests will not be marked.
Excessive preparation for NAPLAN is not recommended. Students can use the public demonstration site (https://www.nap.edu.au/online-assessment/public-demonstration-site) to familiarise themselves with the types of questions and tools available in NAPLAN.
If you have any questions about NAPLAN, please contact your child’s teacher.

Community Messages
Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation runs school holiday STEAM activities for primary school aged kids.
Applications are now open for interested students, aged 8-13. This looks like a great opportunity to bring some fun science to the kids during the holidays.
Places are limited, so if you think this is something your son or daughter would enjoy, the advice is to enrol kids quickly.
