MPS Newsletter: Term 1, Week 10 - 1 April 2021
Principal's Report
Can anyone believe we are now here at the end of Term 1! It has flown and been an incredibly enjoyable term. As always, a lot has been going on over the past couple of weeks so below is a review of events as well as some reminders of some things coming up at the beginning of Term 2. School returns for all students on Tuesday 20 April (The Monday is a School Development day for staff only).
ANZAC Service and March
Just a quick confirmation that the ANZAC Day march will be going ahead on Sunday 25 April. More details will be sent out however, students participating in the march will be required to meet at the RSL at 10am. The service will be at Robertson Park at 11am.
We will be holding our own Mudgee Public School ANZAC Service on Friday 23 April at 10:30am. Thanks in advance to Mr Lesslie who has been working hard already co-ordinating this event.
Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Families
All Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander parents should have received a letter and survey to help get some information to write student Personalised Learning Pathways. It would be great if we could have these surveys returned as soon as possible. As mentioned in the letter, we invite our ATSI community to an afternoon tea early next term for a "Cuppa and a Yarn" on Wednesday 28 April from 3:30 - 4:15. Parents who return their parent surveys or attend the afternoon will receive a ticket for their children in a draw for this NRL signed Indigenous Rugby League football.
Staffing Updates Term 2
We have a few staff changes this upcoming term, particularly in the Learning Support Team. Mrs Skewes has begun her maternity leave, and Mrs Lyons will begin her maternity leave in Week 3. Mr Wheeler, after a term of Learning Support, has decided to begin some well deserved extended leave as he begins the transition to retirement, and as such, it is anticipated he won't return in 2021.
Joining us on the Learning Support Team and RFF positions:
- Amy Gallagher returns from her maternity leave and will be working Monday and Tuesday in Learning Support.
- Belinda Neil is currently working 2 days per week, and will now also be working on a Monday in an RFF role.
- Claire Mortensen is a new staff member who will join us in Week 3, five days per week initially on the Learning Support Team. Claire joins us on loan as a teacher from Ingleburn Public School.
In Weeks 1-3, Mrs Rogers will be on Long Service Leave. We have some backfilling taking place:
- Relieving Deputy Principal; Week 1: Liesel Meers / Week 2: Lisa Smith / Week 3: Mel Shearman
- Relieving Assistant Principal; Week 1 & 2 (Stage 3): Jen O'Brien / Week 3 (Stage 1): Steve Smith
- Relieving Wellbeing Teacher; Week 2: Kathy Walsh
Liesel Meers will also be at Western Region School Rock Band Camp in Week 2.
P&C Meeting
Our next P&C Meeting is scheduled for Monday 26 April (Week 2) at 6pm. The meeting takes place in the residence and will also be available via Zoom (Details to come).
At our last meeting, we were unable to fill the roles of President and Secretary. If you are interested in either of those positions, please get in touch with the P&C via email: mudgeepublicschool@pandcaffiliate.org.au

Cross Country
Under a beautiful blue sky, Mudgee Public held their annual Primary Cross Country at Walkers Oval on Tuesday. It was fantastic seeing so many students dressed up in their House colours, as well as seeing them give their best when they were running – including Mr Baddock and the Principal.
Well done to Gladstone House for winning the event with a staggering 169 points. They were followed by Perry on 120 points, Denison on 115 points and Douro on 60 points.
Congratulations to all the age group winners. The top six placegetters in each age group will advance to the Zone Cross Country to be held in Term 2. More details about Zone Cross Country will follow next term. Thank you to

Class Spotlight -1/2H
1/2H have enjoyed an actioned packed term of exciting learning!
This term our week has involved morning literacy groups; where students are involved in engaging, independent literacy activities, working at L daily with Mrs Hargraves, working on reading and comprehension with Miss Lyons and reading our familiar readers to our wonderful parent helpers. We take part in a daily writing session and are becoming great writers who write with 5 stars and work hard at achieving our individual writing goals. We are extremely grateful for our wonderful SLSO Mrs Kelly who visits us daily to assist with small group programs.
In Maths we have been learning through hands-on discovery and always enjoy a good challenge. We have learnt about numbers and use this knowledge to bridge our algorithms to 10. We made fairy bread fractions and discovered some interesting things when we measured with informal units.
We like to get outdoors for a run and some essential skills practice three days a week for P.E and like spending time with different teachers during our Sport rotations on Wednesdays.
We like to get creative in the afternoons during our art, music and drama programs. We love to experiment and prove our predictions in Science as well. Year 1 have been learning about the Weather with Mrs Single and Year 2 have explored some artifacts during History with Mrs Shearman.
Class Spotlight - 5/6J
Class 5/6J have shared this wonderful video that explains and demonstrates their amazing data analysis lesson which captures lots of student voices across the school. Keep an eye out for many familiar students and teachers in this insight to learning for Stage 3. Well done 5/6J !
Meet the Staff -Mr Terry Conroy
My name is Terry Conroy and I have been part of the Mudgee Public School community for 16 years. I have been GA, Cleaner, Teacher’s Aide, Gardener and am currently Technical Support Officer. My function is to keep the technology in the school operating at it’s best and introduce and implement new devices and systems as they become available. This includes computer equipment, A. V. equipment and during last year the online world. I am a father of four wonderful adult children and six beautiful granddaughters. My wife, Janet, and I enjoy our families, our church involvement and spending time with people. Mudgee Public School has been a significant and enjoyable part of my life’s journey.
